California Capitol Building during the Fall Season

It’s October, the fall season has officially begun, and we are weeks away from the 20th Annual Lights On Afterschool celebration, which is a wonderful reminder that we can and should advocate for after school all year round! Now is the time to engage your communities and elected officials, and remind them how essential our programs are to supporting children and youth all across California.

Lights on Afterschool

This October 24 marks the 20th Lights On Afterschool!

Lights On is the only nationwide event celebrating afterschool programs and their important role in the lives of children, families, and communities. It is a great opportunity to keep our momentum going, raise more awareness in your community, and help mobilize support for afterschool at the local, state, and federal levels! Legislators will be in their districts, looking for ways to connect with the community.

2018 Reflections and Looking Ahead

Happy Holidays!

As the father of two young children, I have the unique opportunity to watch a fair amount of Sesame Street. In a recent episode Elmo boils down the spirit of the season with his song, “it’s all about kindness.” At CAN, we are consistently overwhelmed with the kindness in this field. The kindness and generosity you display in your work every day makes all the difference for the children and families of California.

Rock the OST Vote!

I Voted!

Happy Election Day! Today, I had the great privilege of walking my completed ballot to a local polling place with a group of colleagues. While we may all have had unique voting patterns, we all made the point to make our civic engagement a community activity.

Lights on Event

It has been a busy couple of weeks in the world of CAN, and Expanded Learning. Last week, I had the opportunity to spend Lights on Afterschool with three of the most influential leaders in after school history! These leaders include Jodi Grant, Executive Director of the Afterschool Alliance; Michael Funk, the Director of the CDE’s Expanded Learning Division; and Tom Torlakson, California’s Superintendent of Public Instruction.
