Potential New After School Nutrition Funding: Take Funding Survey

California may soon be eligible for additional federal Nutrition funding through the Afterschool Supper Program, a program already operating in other states. Through this program, funding would be provided for programs to provide a more substantial snack to after school participants. For example, a turkey sandwich, carrot sticks, an apple, and milk would qualify as a “supper” under the program’s guidelines.

Would you participate in this program if it were available in California? To learn more about the program, and indicate whether you would participate in the program through a one-question survey, click here.

Award Opportunity

Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness Spotlight Awards
The Governors council on physical fitness and sports seeks to award individuals and organizations that have stepped forward to make a significant contribution to supporting physical activity and fitness for California children and youth. Individuals have the opportunity to nominate a Non-profit Organization that has taken extraordinary measures to promote physical activity and fitness to the youth it serves and/or a local, regional, or state Park and Recreation Program that has developed an innovative approach for engaging California’s children and youth in physical activities that are fun and habit forming. Other award categories include Teachers, Principals, Schools, and Events. Awards seek to highlight candidates that employed innovation, inspiration, and initiative to provide physical activity for youth. Three awards will be offered in each of the awardee categories highlighted above.

Gold medalists will receive $10,000 and ceremonial recognition at the state capitol. Silver medalists will receive a $2,500 award, and bronze medalists will receive a $1,000 award. The nomination deadline is June 30, 2008. To learn more or submit a nomination, click here.

After School Policy Update

SB 1674 (Torlakson) Passes Assembly Education Committee
Senate Bill 1674 (SB 1674 – Torlakson) has passed on the Senate floor and recently passed by a margin of 6 to 3 in the Assembly Education Committee. The bill now awaits an Assembly Appropriations Committee vote in August 2008. If passed this bill will:

  • Expand opportunities for after school program staff to access the existing Paraprofessional Teacher Training Program;
  • Clarify that ASES grantees using supplemental grants may use grant funds to operate on weekends in addition to inter- session, summer, and vacation periods with students who participate during the regular day program;
  • Ensure that subcontractors of ASES grantees receive a reasonable amount of administrative funds to administer after school programs.
