On Thursday, October 23, 2008 the California Afterschool Network Policy Committee hosted a Policy Update telephone workshop. Network Policy Committee Co-Chairs Brian Lee, Deputy Director of Fight Crime Invest in Kids California, and Jennifer Peck, Executive Director of the Bay Area Partnership for Children and youth offered an overview of policy related to Proposition 49 (ASES) after school funding in the previous legislative session, reviewed the recent veto of AB 1526 which would have eliminated guaranteed ASES funding, and discussed the potential future of proposition 49. The co-chairs also offered an overview of SB 1674 and its recent Governor veto. Also discussed was ACR 134, a resolution that establishes a task force on summer and inter-session learning opportunities for disadvantaged youth. The co-chairs cited the importance of informing the new legislature regarding the impact and importance of after school programs, especially in their respective districts, shared strategies to connect with legislators, and addressed general questions from the field.
