ASES Rate Increase Bill (SB 78) Introduced by Connie Leyva

Post

On January 11, 2017 California State Senator Connie Leyva, member of the Senate Education Committee and Vice Chair of the Women’s Caucus introduced SB 78, which seeks to increase funding for the After School Education and Safety (ASES) program—the main after school funding mechanism in California.  SB 78 would continuously appropriate an additional $99,305,000 to the California Department of Education for the ASES program beginning in the 2018-19 fiscal year, and each fiscal year after that, with ongoing funding increases paired simultaneously with minimum wage increases to ensure that programs remain solvent. Senator Leyva stated, “When 67,000 students could potentially lose access to afterschool programs, I firmily believe that it is vital for state leaders to back efforts to reinforce these successful programs.” The Senate Rules Committee will soon assign the bill to the appropriate Senate policy committee(s) for consideration. Learn more about this bill and the campaign to Save After School
