Wishing you a happy holiday season

The California AfterSchool Network would like to thank you for all of your work in 2014. This year boasted new milestones including the approval and release of the Quality Standards for Expanded Learning in California as the cornerstone of a statewide Strategic Plan for expanded learning. As outlined in the State of the State of Expanded Learning in California, the work you do positively impacts engagement, achievement, and health for California’s highest need students, all year-round. Every day you provide active, collaborative learning environments incorporating unique experiences such as opportunities to learn STEM in expanded learning programs

You are the reason California was ranked number one in expanded learning in the nation in 2014. The California AfterSchool Network is proud to partner with you and support your great work. We look forward to exciting new horizons in 2015.

Have a great winter holiday, and keep up the great work out there!

Building Math and Socio-Emotional Skills
Recently released findings from Oakland learning community

A recently released evaluation released by Public Profit summarizes the impacts of an Oakland professional learning community (PLC) aimed at improving the quality of informal math activities. The Math PLC provided training, on-site coaching, and curriculum to staff members, who led interactive math activities with youth. Staff reported increased confidence in using informal math activities, and staff with limited prior experience leading math activities made the greatest gains. Staff reported they were better able to engage youth in math by implementing hands-on activities and utilizing a social-emotional approach to learning. Additionally, the techniques that staff learned through participation in the learning community translated into other activities they implemented in their program, strengthening their overall practice.
