Rural Committee: Defining Rural

The California AfterSchool Network’s Rural Committee is proud to announce the official working definition of “rural.” The CAN Rural Committee felt it was extremely important for the committee’s rural definition to be carefully crafted to help unite programs and to be a useful tool for the after school field in general.

AB 1879 would require after school consultation in LCAPs

Assembly Bill 1879 was recently introduced to the California State Assembly by Ian Calderon and referred to the Committee on Education and may be heard on March 22, 2014.

The bill would require school district governing boards to consult with a local after school program representative in the creation of Local Control Accountability Plans under the new Local Control Funding Formula.

Existing law requires school district governing boards to annually adopt or update a local control and accountability plan. This local control and accountability plan must be developed in consultation with teachers, principals, administrators, other school personnel, local bargaining units, parents, and pupils. Currently, a representative from a local after school program is not included in the consultation process.
