U.S. Senate Confirms Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education

Earlier today, in a historic 50-50 tie Senate vote, Ms. Betsy DeVos was confirmed as the nation’s 11th Secretary of Education. Vice President Michael Pence was the tie breaking vote in favor of Ms. DeVos confirmation. DeVos confirmation comes with heavy controversy and opposition. Many elected officials, teachers unions, education policy advocates and constituents felt Ms. DeVos is unqualified for the position, has significant conflicts of interest, and has strong potential to support policies that undervalue public education in favor of school vouchers. All 48 Democratic Senators voted in opposition of the confirmation with 2 Republican Senate oppositions (Senator Susan Collins, R-ME, and Senator Lisa Murkowski, R-AK). Read more here.
