Feds Allow Flexibility in SES Funding for the 2016-17 School Year

Post

On February 1, 2016 Superintendent Tom Torlakson released this announcement outlining that the federal government has granted California flexibility on rules regarding $233 million in funding for Supplemental Educational Services (SES) for the 2016–17 school year. SES funds are used to provide tutoring or other academic instruction outside the regular school day for academically deficient students at certain Title I schools, which have high numbers and high percentages of low-income students. The SES program is not contained in the new federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Pages two and three of the attached guidance from the US Department of Education outlines that in order to ensure an orderly transition to the ESSA, LEAs must develop and implement a one-year transition plan for ensuring that their LEAs provide alternative supports for the students eligible for supplemental education services.
