Introduced Legislation Would Increase ASES Daily Rate, Institute COLA

Post

Most publicly-funded after school programs in California are funded through The Afterschool Education & Safety (ASES) program. Recently released documents highlight that ASES funding has remained stagnant for almost a decade while costs have been consistently increasing. ASES program costs have increased by double digits since 2006 without an increase in the daily rate (still $7.50 per child per day). Assembly Member Jim Cooper (D-09) introduced legislation to increase funding for After School Education and Safety (ASES) programs. Assembly Bill 2663 (AB 2663) seeks to raise the ASES daily rate up from $7.50 to $8.50 per student per day and institute an ongoing COLA (Cost of Living Adjustment) in the ASES program. AB 2663 was introduced on February 19th, with several coauthors including Senator Loni Hancock, who introduced a similar bill in 2015.
