Keynote Speaker:
Marcus L. Strother is a father, husband, educator and a youth and community advocate. Marcus is a 20 year veteran in the education field spending 17 years in Illinois and has since relocated to Sacramento, California for the past two and half years. Marcus spent 8 years as a classroom teacher, teaching Language Arts, Life and Social Skills and Advocacy. Marcus also spent 9 years as a high school administrator with a focus on teacher evaluation, PBIS, school culture, and discipline. Marcus is currently the Director of Youth Development at Sacramento City Unified School District. In this role, Marcus oversees Expanded Learning Programs, Summer Programming and Boys and Girls of Color work, which includes the coordination of the Men’s and Women’s Leadership Academy. (Read more)

Ally Stands for Action: Supporting LGBT and Students in
Expanded Learning

This is an interactive workshop that presents strategies to
create safe and engaging spaces for LGBT+ students. Basic
terminology, recent changes in state laws, and data is presented
with a focus on LGBT+ youth who are homeless and in foster care.
You will learn how to be an “ally” and what action steps you can
take to support LGBT+ youth. National and local resources will be
provided to strengthen your program.

The Policy Committee of the Expanded Learning Division has
created a presentation on Direct Service to Pupils,
Administrative, Indirect Costs (also known as
85/15) and Supplement vs. Supplant to give grantees a
better understanding of the requirements, review the common
issues surfaced through Federal Program Monitoring and Audits and
provide resources. Don’t miss this opportunity to engage with the

Best Day Ever!

This hands on project based workshop is designed to expose
participants to an actual day in the life of a program that is
meeting Quality Standards to provide enriching, safe, and
engaging activities. Building relationships with students is an
important foundation on which to build a successful program. The
group will introduce themselves in a Sharing Circle to show how
to start building relationships at the beginning of program. We
will discuss best practices then do activities. I will monitor
each group and model how to accomplish this goal, offering
suggestions as needed for success. Participants will choose an
activity; make a collage, prepare a healthy snack, or build with
magnetic shapes. At the conclusion of the activities, we will
reflect on the activities and share our accomplishments. We will
close with sharing how participants will use these new skills in
their programs.

Exploring Fee-for-Service to Sustain and Improve Your
Program

This informational session will examine fee-for-service models
and provide clarity on legal requirements and program compliance,
as well as delve into how programs can create a more positive
culture and climate, and improve overall quality through a
strategy that includes fees. It will include a combination of
PowerPoint slides, interactive discussion, helpful handouts, and
sharing of promising practices from the field. Come and learn

Solving the Social Isolation Equation with Student
Leadership

Beyond Differences offers attendees a deeper understanding of one
of the most pressing public health issues of our day: social
isolation among youth. Through this interactive
professional development workshop, participants will walk in the
shoes of students and learn how they can change the culture of
middle school with Know Your Classmates (KYC). KYC explores
differences of faith, tradition, family and identity — crucial
to helping students accept differences and connect with one
another. Beyond Differences is a student-led social justice
movement and the only organization dedicated to ending social
isolation by empowering students to become activists and change
the culture of middle school.

of Support for Expanded Learning (SSEL) and learn about ways to
access technical assistance and resources, and see how we put the

Restorative Justice is not a particular program or blueprint.
Restorative Justice is an invitation to dialogue and an
exploration of what a community (Expanded Learning Program) needs
to ensure all members strengthen and maintain healthy
relationships. In this session participants will be empowered and
educated on how to facilitate “Healing circles” in expanded
learning programs. This session will be very interactive and
engaging for all levels of staffing.

ASSETs 101 – Running a High Quality High School
