CAN is a catalyst for quality, building capacity by promoting a shared vision of program quality and advancing a culture of Continuous Improvement throughout the Expanded Learning ecosystem.

CAN’s focus on quality includes network and collaboration building, disseminating promising practices and providing virtual and in-person professional learning opportunities, forums and convenings to build the capacity of the field with the end result having high-quality programs for all.

The Quality Standards for Expanded Learning in California were identified to create a framework of clear expectations, and a shared vision of both programmatic and point of service quality among multiple stakeholders. The purpose of the Quality Standards is to describe high levels of “Quality” of a program at the programmatic, staff, and participant levels.

The Quality Self Assessment Tool

The California Expanded Learning Quality Self Assessment Tool is meant to spark meaningful conversations about increased program quality at both the site and organizational levels. The Quality Self Assessment Tool aligns with the Quality Standards for Expanded Learning, supports Continuous Quality Improvement and builds on youth development practices by incorporating elements of Social Emotional Learning and 21st Century skills using a lens of equity.
