What is the CAN English Learners Committee?
The English Learners (EL) Committee of the California AfterSchool Network is a dedicated group of professionals sharing and disseminating information, resources, promising practices, as well as a shared work plan to increase field capacity to effectively support English Learners in California’s expanded learning programs.

How do I join?*
There are two types of Committee membership: “Active” and “Informational.” Active members make an ongoing commitment to advance the Committee work plan during, and outside of meetings (not to exceed three hours monthly).

Active members

  • Inform and create the Committee work plan.
  • Participate in at least 4 of 6 annual Committee meetings.
  • Participate in at least one working group of the Committee.
  • Advance Committee work (and next steps) outside of Committee and work group meetings.
  • Are first to receive information regarding available resources (including funding opportunities) available to support English Learners in expanded learning programs.
  • Are publicly acknowledged for their participation on the CAN website.

Informational members:

  • Are interested in the work of the Committee, and the cause the Committee advances, but are not able to commit to active membership.
  • Receive intermittent updates on Committee work and available resources.

English Learner Committee work groups include:

  • Resource Hub Work Group – Inform the creation of an informational web page informing the field of available resources, promising practices, technical assistance and training, research, and other relevant resources to support the expanded learning field to effectively support English Learners.  This work group will update the current EL webpage
  • New Education Standards Work Group - Inform, gather, and (if necessary) create resources that provide information on how promising practices to support English Learners in expanded learning programs can be implemented in the context of new educational standards (e.g.Common Core State Standards and Next Generation Science Standards) and budget priorities (e.g. Local Control Funding Formula).

* If you are currently on the EL Committee, you will remain as an Informational member unless you sign-up as an Active member. This is a perfect leadership opportunity to advance quality for English language learners in your programs. Please feel free to share this with your teams and program staff. Please sign up by February 13, 2015.
