American high schools are in crisis.   The education community is ready for a unifying theory of learning  for adolescents based on decades of solid research.  A fresh look at educating our youth, embracing   developmental trajectories, and profiting from years of research and proven innovation, has been crafted by top researchers Robert Halpern (Erikson Institute, University of Chicago), Paul Heckman (University of California, Davis) and Reed Larson (University of Illinois).  Entitled “Realizing the Potential of Learning in Middle Adolescence,” this study

was commissioned by the Sally and Dick Roberts Coyote Foundation, with additional support from the W. T. Grant Foundation.  Halpern, Heckman and Larson define ten Principles of Learning for those charged with educating our young people.   The California Afterschool Network joins Dick Roberts (Chairman of the Sally and Dick Roberts Coyote Foundation), the authors, Janet Kelley of Kelley Collaborative in an effort to bring these principles to the nation’s educational community.  For more information, contact Janet Kelley (jk@janetkelley.com)  or  Frank Pisi (fapisi@ucdavis.edu).
