California’s budget negotiations have seen proposals to eliminate child care programs and place proposition 49 (ASES funding) back on the ballot. The Federal Government is currently creating its 2011/2012 budget and is starting to move forward on amending and reauthorizing the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA: formerly No Child Left Behind).

On Thursday, October 23, 2008 the California Afterschool Network Policy Committee hosted a Policy Update telephone workshop. Network Policy Committee Co-Chairs Brian Lee, Deputy Director of Fight Crime Invest in Kids California, and Jennifer Peck, Executive Director of the Bay Area Partnership for Children and youth offered an overview of policy related to Proposition 49 (ASES) after school funding in the previous legislative session, reviewed the recent veto of AB 1526 which would have eliminated guaranteed ASES funding, and discussed the potential future of proposition 49.
