Exemplary Practices in School Nutrition

The Center for Collaborative Solutions (CCS) introduces a new publication guide for afterschool programs. The Developing Exemplary Practices in Nutrition, Physical Activity and Food Security in Afterschool Programs is designed to assist afterschool program leaders and their partners in combating the youth obesity epidemic. The guide includes exemplary practices and indicator rubrics designed for afterschool programs to assess their progress in addressing youth obesity. The CCS also provides free Growing Healthy Children Regional Trainings.

The Guide to Social Change Led by and With Young People

The Freechild Project recently released the Guide to Social Change Led By and With Young People. This guide provides an overview of youth led social change, a step-by-step cyclical model for mobilizing youth, overview of many of the issues facing youth, and potential actions youth can take.

Supporting High-Quality Math Learning After School

Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development recently released this article which focuses on high-quality mathematics exercises conducted after-school to increase student achievement and improve attitudes toward learning math. It highlights six practices and identifies nine principles that should guide practitioners in the planning and designing of after-school math programs. The article links to the larger studies by which the principles and practices were cited, a comprehensive rubric outlining the nine documented principles, and the SEDL online toolkit math section.

Helping Youth Succeed Through Out-of-School Time Programs.

The report reviews and summarizes literature on out-of-school time program quality and identifies a number of program characteristics that seem to be successful in helping young people develop academic, workforce, and life-skills. The report offers recommendations to policy makers and practitioners to support and sustain high quality out-of-school time opportunities for older youth.
