Reflecting on the Afterschool and Summer Challenge!
March 2026

students marching for Afterschool and Summer Challenge

This year, the CAN team participated alongside many others from across the state in the annual Afterschool and Summer Challenge, organized by CalSAC in partnership with CA3. The event drew strong representation from most regions, with many traveling to Sacramento to advocate for our Expanded Learning field and to bring young people and families. Students and families had the opportunity to speak directly with their legislators, some for the first time, to emphasize the importance of our Expanded Learning programs.

More than 420 participants attended the Challenge! For a recap of the event, check out CalSAC’s webpage.

If you attended the Challenge this year, you might have seen Nat Rosales co-speaking at the opening plenary. You might also have seen Vanessa Hernandez engaging Teens Advocating for Civic Action (TACA) youth in a listening session for the Ecosystem Plan. You might also have seen our Policy Team between your legislative meetings. We enjoyed seeing and connecting with you!

Save the date for next year! Mark your calendars for March 8-9, 2027.
