STEM Learning Ecosystems Initiative Visits the White House

Earlier this month, a group of OC STEM, Los Angeles Regional STEM Hub, San Diego EcosySTEM, and Ventura County STEM members and partners were among leaders, who met at the White House as part of the first gathering of the STEM Learning Ecosystems Initiative. STEM Funders Network created this new initiative to bring STEM learning to life for all young people. A STEM learning ‘ecosystem’ provides an opportunity for connected, equitable learning opportunities for students, inside and outside of the classroom and throughout their community. More information about the initiative, can be found at the STEM Learning Ecosystems Initiative website.

Science Framework Now Available for Public Comment

The California Department of Education has released the first draft of the 2016 Science Framework for California Public Schools, Kindergarten Through Grade Twelve (Science Framework). This will be available for its first 60-day period of public review and comment. The Science Framework will guide teachers, district and county administrators, other educators, and publishers in their instructional materials, curriculum, instruction, assessments, and professional learning.

California is Improving Environmental Learning

Tom Torlakson, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, released A Blueprint for Environmental Literacy, a plan to improve instruction for students on the environment. A Blueprint for Environmental Literacy is a result of a 47-member Environmental Literacy Task Force lead by co-chairs Elizabeth Babcock of the California Academy of Sciences and Craig Strang of the Lawrence Hall of Science, that convened last year to evaluate the state of environmental education.

Free Middle-School Engineering Curriculum

Engineering Everywhere, which provides afterschool curriculum for middle-school-aged youth, has two new units. “Growing Up” is an agricultural engineering unit, where students’ are challenged to design farms, while “Go Fish” focuses on biomechanical engineering through challenges to design prosthetic devices for animals. Each is designed to include six to ten different hands-on-activities and a documentary video to set the context for youth as they explore each new challenge. Computer Science is Now A Part of STEM!

In October, the Federal STEM Education Act of 2015 was signed into law and expanded the definition of STEM to include computer science programs. While the new law does not add funding, it does expand the types of STEM programs that can be both run and federally funded. For more information read more here.

Students, 11- 18 have a Free Opportunity to Launch Experiments into Space

idoodlelearning, inc, in partnership with the Colorado Space Grant Consortium is offering STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) focused global education program free of cost to students ages 11-18. This opportunity includes a chance for students to design and compete to launch an experiment into space. Cubes in Space™ uses formal or informal to prepare students to design and development an experimental payload that will be integrated into a small cube.
