CAN Newsletter – Celebrating Women’s History Month
March 14, 2023
Happy March and welcome to the CAN Newsletter! If you are new here, we are happy to have you join the CAN Family! CAN celebrates the incredible women and folks who identify as women – who are youth developers and community educators! The strong, courageous, creative, intelligent, resilient, and inspiring women and sheroes who go above & beyond to support youth, families, and communities in being the best they can be. We see you, we hear you, and we stand in solidarity with you!
This is an exciting quarter of the year for CAN…
- This past February we successfully convened our 2023 Site Coordinator Symposium.
- This March, we are excited to support and participate in the 2023 CA Afterschool & Summer Challenge and host the virtual 2023 Spring ELO-P Academy for CA educators
- And in April, we are honored to sponsor and participate in the 2023 BOOST Conference!
Additionally, we continue to support our field with various supports in Policy & Outreach and Equity & Quality. We look forward to closing the winter season and springing forward with the best EXL/OST programs on the westcoast!
Lastly, in our January newsletter, we invited you to join us in journaling to promote self-care. Below are a few prompts to consider this month:
- What is your greatest strength?
- Who has had the biggest impact on your life in a positive way?
- Describe your quiet spot of rest.
- What is your favorite thing to do to relax?
- What motivated you the most today?
The CAN Team
The California AfterSchool Network (CAN), California Department of Education (CDE), Expanded Learning Division (EXLD), and members of the System of Support for Expanded Learning (SSEL), are excited to offer a free virtual Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELO-P) Academy!
Join us for our workshop strand at the 2023 BOOST Conference: Create with CAN: Building a Better and Brighter Future for Children and Youth. We will be hosting a variety of workshop with topics including: empowering site coordinators, tools for increasing quality, creating a thriving workforce, how we equity, and more.
The California Department of Education (CDE), Expanded Learning Division, is providing the following guidance on school site substitutions for the fiscal year (FY) 2023–24. This guidance may be updated annually and should be responded to accordingly. Grantees should note an update this year to the school site substitution process from previous years. There is a single filing date of April 28, 2023, that must be adhered to. An approved school site substitution will be effective July 1, 2023. Grantees should refer to their board or governing entity regarding school closures for FY 2023–24.
CASEL’s free, one-hour virtual learning course, An Introduction to SEL, was designed to explore the fundamentals of Social Emotional Learning for school and district leaders, school staff, parents and caregivers, staff at youth-serving organizations, and anyone who’s curious about SEL.
Beyond defining SEL in clear, concrete terms, the course includes reflections and activities to help you understand how you can use SEL to support the young people in your life.
Creating and Sustaining a Caring Culture in Afterschool and Summer Programs
Wednesday, March 15, 2023; 10:00 AM PST
Afterschool Alliance is hosting an upcoming panel discussion with expects from Harmony SEL at National University, WINGS for Kids, and LA’s BEST where they will share insights on how to infuse social and emotional development in every aspect of organizational culture.
The benefits from prioritizing organizational culture include having greater positive impacts not just on the young people that programs serve, but also on the social and emotional development of staff and improved staff engagement and retention.
Join State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond; Director of the CDE Multilingual Support Division Alesha Moreno Ramirez; and CDE’s new Co-Directors for Statewide Literacy, Nancy Brynelson and Dr. Bonnie Garcia, for a webinar to learn about strategies to help California students reach reading by third grade.
This webinar will include discussions on the English Language Arts/English Language Development framework, English learner supports, and more.
