STEAM Newsletter – To The Moon, Back, and now…Beyond
July 19, 2022

A clay astronaut with a spaceship behind it

It was exactly 53 years ago astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin made history when they became the first human beings to set foot on the moon.  This month the Million Girls Moonshot and all of its parters commemorate that “giant leap for mankind” as it remains one of humanity’s greatest achievements. We look to the future, to the next generation of engineers and scientists. What will be their “giant leap”? And most importantly, how do we support young people on their journey in STEM?

This month the Million Girls Moonshot and all of its partners celebrate Earth Day, Math Awareness Month and Environmental Education Week! Now is the time for all of us — education, business, and civic leaders — to take action on climate in order to preserve and protect our health, our families, and our livelihoods. To do this, we need to inspire the next generation of creative thinkers and problem solvers to design the solutions that will get us there. This Earth Day, let us act boldly, innovate broadly, and implement equitably.

STEAM Newsletter – Applying Engineering Mindsets through Math and Science
December 21, 2021

Two girls participating in a robotics experimentDecember is always a special time of year. It is a chance to reflect on all of the successes of the year and explore how we might be able to do more as we head into the new year.

With this in mind, Million Girls Moonshot is highlighting STEM learning with an engineering mindset this December! Utilizing this mindset allows us to explore the unknown while applying skills and knowledge we already have – like math and science. Activating an engineering mindset pulls directly from these skills and allows us to solve real-work and relevant challenges.

This October we are celebrating girls and women in STEAM! “Let’s reimagine who can be an engineer; who can build; who can make. Let’s reimagine the future,” is the mission of the Million Girls Moonshot (MGM). As we celebrate the women in this field, it’s a perfect opportunity to explore MGM’s four transformative practices:

As schools and OST programs return and welcome students, educators, families, and communities to the 2021-2022 school year, we recognize the unique times we continue to work through. While we continue to experience the COVID pandemic and its layers of challenges, unfortunately, regions of Northern California are also currently experiencing destructive wildfires. These fires are damaging homes, schools, communities, and ultimately impacting the environment. Our hearts, thoughts, and support are extended to our OST family and communities affected by these fires.

Welcome to CAN’s monthly STEAM newsletter!

This month, the Million Girls Moonshot will continue to focus on tools and resources for Networks, programs, and partners as they implement STEM in summer programming. As programs across the country slowly head back to hybrid and in person programming, this is an opportunity to reintroduce the four transformative programming areas: equity and inclusion, engineering mindsets, role models, mentors and families, and STEM pathways and transitions to the field and families.

Welcome to CAN’s second monthly STEAM newsletter!

This month, the Million Girls Moonshot continues to focus on diverse role models and mentors as a strategy to strengthen equity and inclusion across the Networks and in STEM programs. They dive deeper into how programs can incorporate STEM role models and provide examples of role models in action. Whether you are inviting a role model to visit your afterschool program, organizing a panel of STEM professionals, connecting with a role model virtually, or viewing a role model video, these resources ensure a positive, impactful experience for the participants and the role models.
